Getting the Edge: Tapping The Power of The Mind
WHY MENTAL TRAINING NOW?
What do Lee Iacoca, Walt Disney, and Pat Riley all have in common? Two things. (1) They all created incredible dynasties which dominated in their arena of competition. (2) They were willing to go for it--in fact, there were already going for it--when their opponents were busy saying, "That takes too long, it's too hard, or it's too controversial."
Iacoca, Disney, and Riley are illustrations of what the psychology of exception is all about. In order to be THE best in the world, in order to be exceptional, you must be willing to go an extra mile and take risks while everyone else is doubting, protecting, and attempting to avoid errors and failure.
Riley, for example, was the first NBA coach to fully incorporate strength training into his team's practice regime. At that time, early in the 80's, lifting weights was reserved for body building "freaks" like the Incredible Hulk, Lou Ferrigno. Or for weak kids bullied around the playground. Coaches were afraid of weight training, focusing on misconceptions concerning injury, loss of coordination and flexibility, and an insistence that "tough" athletes don't need it. Meanwhile, Riley was finding a way to make his team quicker and more powerful than any other. Today every team has a specialist devoted to strength and conditioning.
Think about Walt Disney's pursuit of excellence. There's a guy who decided he was going to build a multi-million dollar "magic kingdom", featuring a giant mouse, smack in the middle of a swamp, and that families everywhere around the world would come pouring in to see his creation. Crazy! But exceptional. Disney did not accept mediocrity. He didn't go with a business plan that was easy or safe, or one that would kowtow to highly educated businessmen who "knew" that a giant mouse wouldn't sell. Following that route would have assured him a functional business. But Disney didn't care about just doing business. He was after the most successful business in history. And the rest is history.
Today, the parallel for building athletic dynasties is a commitment to holistic training--being on the cutting edge of mind and body excellence. It is teaching athletes how to use their mind as a weapon while every other team is busy playing it safe.
In truth, yesterday's athletes could get away with not having a great head. But tomorrow's can't. The number of competitors is skyrocketing, physical training is becoming equivalent throughout the league, and the amount of money at stake is reaching astronomical figures. Is it worth gambling a couple million on an athlete without having the appropriate resources available to make sure he builds a superior mind in time for him to make an impact?
The beauty of it is, while everyone else is making excuses the doors are open for the next Pat Riley to find a way for his organization to have the most finely tuned athletes, physically and mentally. Which brings us to Lee Iacoca. Iacoca once remarked that being a business genius was actually easy. "As long as my competition stays in place, concerning themselves with what works right now, all I have to do is keep moving forward."
As we approach the turn of the century, the teams that move forward will be those that get a jump on the mental game. Very few athletes have access to this type of leading edge training. And, very few specialists are trained to provide this elite service. But, that's good news. Good, anyway, for the one or two teams that get this edge first.
WHAT AREAS OF THE MENTAL GAME NEED TO BE TACKLED?
- Thinking Great All of the Time: Attitudes must be consistent if an athlete is to generate the benchmark of a champion--consistent performance. Why pay a huge salary to a player who thinks great in practice but not in nationally televised games?
- Conditioning the Mind to Play an Extended Season: Professional sports seasons are lengthy. In order to stay sharp, an athlete must learn how to keep his/her mind strong for months on end--a concern particularly relevant to rookies who only have experience playing short high school or college seasons.
- Returning to Play After Severe Injuries: At the elite level, athletes are used to playing through pain. Coming back from major surgery such as ACL reconstruction, however, requires a special confidence--taking that first hit and trusting your knee will hold up.
- Maximizing Potential: Owners and GM's spend millions of dollars recruiting, signing, and then training hot prospects. It is ridiculous to make this size investment on an athlete without assuring that he/she will perform up to potential. Why risk the chance that his/her mind won't be where it needs to be?
- Knowing How to Stay in the Present: Because of modern technology, lots of analytical processing occurs off the field. However, if athletes continue to analyze while competing, they won't be able to stay loose, unconscious, and trusting of their instincts.
- Taking Risks; Going For It: Trying to be the best in the world puts an athlete in a position where he/she will fail and receive criticism a tremendous amount of the time. In order to make the "big" plays when opportunities present themselves--to come through in the clutch--athletes must develop confidence and learn to get past fear of failure so they are not just playing "safe".
- Getting Past Setbacks and Preventing Slumps: It's easy to think and feel great when you are winning, when everything is going your way. But, what separates champions is how effectively and efficiently they think regardless of external or internal circumstances.
- Building a Winning Environment: Despite best intentions, relationships between teammates or between athletes and their coaches is sometimes strained. This inhibits learning and productivity. Thus, having an impartial resource to promote cohesion and chemistry is invaluable.
- A Focus on Holistic Training: Simply put, athletes who feel valued and appreciated perform better. Hiring resources to tend to every aspect of training demonstrates to players just how much management cares about their success. A focused on excellence from the top down will motivate players take more responsibility and, in turn, get more out of their natural ability.

The thing is upset because the hulk has been talking some smack about the fantastic fours Ben Grim, better known as the Thing, but Thing quickly figures out that the Anti monitor is instigating the fight to destroy his most feared adversaries in his diablical plot to gain control over Alonsos Toy Box. Once Anti monitor controls the toy box he will plan create friction among the actions figures and spark up a battle for control, and add more numbers to his army of evil minions, but his plan backfires. This is what happens when you got way too much time on your hands.

Energized Spider-man Action Figure
A rare "Energized" Spider-Man action figure commercial from the 70's. He actually had a "Spider-Copter!" LOL! It would've made more sense if it was Energized Batman with the Bat-Copter or Batmobile. Then again, in the Grantray-Lawrence Spider-man cartoons of 1967, in the episode, "Fountain of Terror", Spidey actually makes a motorboat out of his spider webs, so why not give him a spider-copter! LOL! Some cartoons made no sense back then, but it was great fun to watch! As Stan Lee says, "Excelsior!"

Building a Collection of Comic Books
In the past collectors have found that comic books have certainly come a long way and are valuable collector items. Every person in every walk of life has enjoyed them at some time in their life and collectors are more than willing to add one of these collectible works of art to their collection.
They may be seen as simply a form of childish entertainment to some, but to a collector they are sophisticated works of art that can be extremely valuable. In fact, the first appearances of renowned heroes like Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman could actually purchase a million dollar home. When building a collection of them the collector needs to decide what is their actual motivation for collecting and what are the top comic books. Also a collector needs to decide if they plan to purchase comic books as an investment and then plan to resell them later on, or are they purchasing them as a hobby strictly and for recreational reading.
Some collectors enjoy collecting them for the entertainment they can bring, but they have no desire what so ever of reselling them. Collectors need to determine exactly how much time and money they plan to put into their collection, not to mention how much effort. Today comic books are released on a weekly basis with just about every title having issues that are released once a month, which means at least twelve issues per year. They can be purchased at bookstores, grocery stores, specialty shops, and even on-line.
However, a local store is the best possible source due to the salespeople here being much more knowledgeable and being able to assist you with any question about them that you may have. Those stores will also have whatever a collector will need for storing their valuable comic books. They normally carry a wide array of older issues of in addition to the newer ones and even graphic novels, which are comics that have been bound in a magazine or book form.
Just as in the case of any other collectible, collectors should choose the type of comic book that is right for them, especially since they come in a wide variety of subjects and styles. They come in action adventure, comedy, mystery, horror, science fiction, fantasy, and religious, so it really does not matter what type of stories you are interested in there is one out there for every collector. There are also many publishing companies that will publish comic book with the largest two and the most successful being MARVEL Comics and DC Comics.
MARVEL Comics publishes such characters as Spider Man, The Hulk, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and even Captain America, while DC Comics has published such incredible characters as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Justice League. Another publisher of comic books is Dark Horse Comics, which has published such fine works as Star Wars, Aliens, and the Terminator. Other publishing companies that publish comics include Image Comics, Top Cow Productions, Inc., Fantagraphics Books, Oni Press and Dynamite Entertainment are only just a few.

With so many superheroes nowadays and many super-villains as well, there is no doubt that there is a toy for all off them. New Marvel Action Figures have also been created like Blade, Ghost Rider and Scarlet Witch, Sasquatch, Mr. Sinister and many more.
There are also the new look action figurines of the superheroes we have always known like Spiderman, X men, Daredevil and many more. If you are interested in buying this great Marvel Action Figures then just jump into the internet where you will find loads of sites selling them and you can even get a good bargain for them. Most of the will be quite expensive especially if they are old and are still in their original box or cover in mint condition.

Super Hero Games For the Nintendo Wii
Super heroes have been around for a very long time in the form of comic books and action figures. They have found their way to the big screen and even to the world of video games. They are timeless and they never seem to go out of style. It seems in this world of good and evil there is always room for one more super hero to come along and save the day.
If you love super heroes you will be very excited to discover that there are plenty of Nintendo Wii games that fit into this category. The have wonderful effects so you can feel like you are a part of the game. You can bring the characters to life instead of just moving them around. You will likely get lost in the action that is going on.
One of the newest ones out there is Spiderman 3. Set in the city of New York, Spiderman is out there trying to save the day anyway he can. What is very original about this version of the game is that you can go with the regular suit or the black one that Spiderman wears in the movie. When Spiderman is wearing the black suit he is stronger and faster. Yet we all know there are ways in which that suit consumes him so you better be ready for them in the game.
There are complete storylines from the movie that you can play through if you wish to do so. If not, you will have the option to create your own scenes along the way. With this particular super hero game for the Wii you aren't just trying to save others; you are trying to save Spiderman from himself as well. Will your desire for power be too much and lead to your own destruction? Will not using the black suit though mean you aren't powerful enough at times to defeat the enemies? There are plenty of cool effects and plenty of great features found in this game that you will be quite impressed with.
If destruction is more your style the Incredible Hulk game may be what you are interested in. He is huge and green and can get very angry when things don't go his way. Even though the Hulk is attempting to be helpful he leaves a mess every where he goes. You may be having a great time destroying everything in your path but you need to be careful. The more you destroy the more forces will be coming to take you out. That could mean your game ends before you have gotten to explore very much out there.
The game portrays the Incredible Hulk as more of a human than a cartoon version. In fact if you have see the newly released movie then you will understand that there is a connection between the two. It is no accident that this newly released Wii game came out around the same time as the movie hit theatres. Most people agree that they like this humanist form of the Hulk much better.
There is also Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law. With this particular super hero game Harvey has to solve some tough cases. Are you up to the task of helping him do so? There are some that are relatively easy to solve and others that are going to take a great deal of concentration on your part. You can have a great time with this Wii game as well as enjoying sharpening your thinking skills.
The legacy of super heroes lives on with the many Nintendo Wii games. If you have a couple of favorites you can choose those games to play. It can be fun to be a part of those games instead of just reading about that super hero or watching them on TV. Nintendo has done a terrific job of bringing these images to life for people to really get into the game.

Toys Take Up the Fun
Toys are everywhere! They come in all shapes, sizes, and brands. Most toys are created to provide pure enjoyment for children while others are made to help stimulate a child's mind in a fun way. In any case, toys are a great way to keep a youngster occupied.
Some of the most popular toys out on the market these days are action figures and Barbie dolls. Some action figures are based on movies that have recently hit the theatres. For example, one award winning action figure is The Incredible Hulk, which is a movie that came on June 13th, 2008. Barbie dolls have been around for over 49 years and they have still been running strong! There is a Barbie for each little girl's fantasy. The joy of Barbie is that you can dress her up and match her clothes with accessories sold separately. Barbie's hair is also another attraction as it comes long and pliable so that little girls can arrange and decorate her hair as they please.
Toys don't necessarily have to be action figures or dolls. They can even be audio books. No, audio books are not just for adults. They help children appreciate stories that are heard as well as those written on paper. Since a lot of audio books include a cast of readers as well as sound effects, it is easy for even the younger children to get caught up in the excitement of the story as it is being told.
Educational toys include LeapFrog and Fisher-Price products. Fisher-Price has been providing fun education for children everywhere since 1930. Some brands under this name are Disney, Sesame Street, Barney, Dora the Explorer, and See 'n Say. If you can stir up a child's love of learning when they are young, that drive to learn new and interesting things will stay with him or her right into adulthood. Keep in mind, not all learning has to take place in a formal environment. Of course, school is important, but we should be open to learning new things in a variety of settings.
Whether it be a toy that was made for all fun and games or a toy that was made for teaching a child new things, you can't go wrong. Toys are a great gift for a kid of any age and for any occasion. Suppose it is little Mike's 6th birthday. What ever should you get him? A toy airplane is not a bad idea at all! But what about little Sara? What should you get her for Christmas? Every little girl with their very own dollhouse would hold it dear to their hearts.

Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch (Oct. 23, 1960 - July 25, 2008) gave his last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007, before a packed mcconomy Auditorium. In his moving presentation, "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals.
